Southern Railway Recruitment 2023 :  The Southern Railway, often referred to as Southern, is a historic railway system in the United States. It was originally a major railroad that operated in the Southern United States, primarily in the Southeast and South Central regions. The Southern Railway was founded in 1894 and eventually became a prominent player in the American railroad industry. It played a crucial role in the transportation of passengers and freight, particularly in the Southeast.  

The Southern Railway system covered a vast network of tracks and served various cities, including Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, and many others. It had a significant impact on the development and growth of the regions it served, facilitating trade and commerce.  

In 1982, the Southern Railway merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) to form the Norfolk Southern Corporation. This merger created one of the major Class I railroads in the United States, known as Norfolk Southern. The merger allowed for greater efficiency and operational synergies in the railroad industry.  

Today, Norfolk Southern continues to operate as a major freight railroad in the Eastern United States, covering a substantial portion of the former Southern Railway’s territory. It plays a crucial role in the transportation of various goods, including coal, automobiles, and industrial products.
